Bragging Rights Poker came about as an idea that would encourage people of all poker skill levels to come together to enjoy the game of Texas hold ’em, for the purpose of helping to raise funding for charity. With minimal financial risk and commitment from its participants, it has all the elements to create a sustainable event that provides a unique entertainment experience within a positive social setting and a community conscience.

All time and effort put in by the organizers and assistants is on a 100% volunteer basis, including venue organization, social media and web site maintenance, finance management, and many other miscellaneous administrative operations. This ensures that the majority of the proceeds goes directly to charity, with only the cost of the essential supplies for the poker games being deducted (i.e. card decks, memento trophies, printed materials, etc.). These expenses are expected to be minimal and will be made public in the results published in the News page on conclusion of each tournament.

While the current scope has some intentional restrictions (tournament player capacity, region/partner venues, charities, event frequency, etc.), the longer term hope is that the concept’s popularity grows and each of these aspects grow accordingly in keeping with the increased success. If you would like to become part of our team or would consider starting similar tournaments in other locations, please contact us to discuss your thoughts and possibilities!

Charities

Although the list of charities we are supporting could possibly expand, our approach will be to ensure a consistent donation to those we choose. The current charity we have chosen is a Dominican Republic orphanage located locally in the Sosua/Cabarete region – the people, the cause, and the genuine good intentions of the service and its track record certainly warrants all the help they can receive. Without a doubt, it requires exceptional character and heart to make the sacrifices required for so many for so long…

Refugio Faro de Luz de Jesucristo

Located in La Ciénaga, this children’s orphanage has been in operation for 16 years. Overcoming unimaginable challenges and struggles to continue providing a much-needed service for such a long period, they recently had to deal with the unexpected loss of their private funding. This quickly left them in a nearly hopeless position to find an alternative means of providing food, shelter, and the basic necessities for 25+ children currently under their stewardship. These children range from toddlers to mature teenagers (2 – 18 years old), which translates to a very broad range of needs and responsibilities.

Other Ways to Help

The orphanage is always in need of direct financial assistance, having no other sustainable reliable means of ensuring daily requirements of the children are met. Currently, cash donations can be made in several ways:

  • by joining us at a Bragging Rights Poker event and participating in any fundraising activities that take place – or making a cash donation directly to the Bragging Rights Poker representative.
  • through a PayPal transfer to the PayPal account: @islandbreeze1
  • through a Venmo transfer to the Venmo account: @Micki-Salvage
  • contact us and we’ll arrange a convenient time to meet you.

In addition to monetary donations, the orphanage is in DIRE NEED of clothing, ranging from toddlers to teenagers – every item has value here, so please contact us to arrange a pick-up plan.

And lastly, miscellaneous items, such as furniture, bedding, etc. gets well-used with this many children. Any such items that you’d be willing to part with would be greatly appreciated and well-deserved. Again, contact us and we’ll do the legwork!

Truly, in the Dominican Republic, every little bit does count when it comes to surviving for these children… and we’re hoping if we all give a little, it’ll add up to a lot for them!
